Reflecting on God’s invitation to witness His work among us.
Hanging in our living room is a print of Rublev’s beautiful Icon of the Trinity that I purchased from an Orthodox church in Russia twenty years ago. I have contemplated this print numerous times over the years, but I’d somehow missed the tiny window on the table around which the three visitors are gathered, until my pastor pointed it out to me. The next time I gazed at it in prayer, I heard the words, “Come and see.” There is so much that burdens our hearts in our own lives and around the world, but God is at work, calling us to “come and see” the “goodness of the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 27:14).”
For 20 years, KCEF has been nourishing and educating God’s children in Kenya by partnering with trusted Kenyan leaders serving the poorest of the poor in their communities. Meet Our New Partner School — Red Hill Education Center
As we celebrate 20 years of God’s faithfulness through KCEF, we believe He is still inviting us to come and see. This year, that invitation led us to a place we had never served before—a community on the edge of the Dandora landfill in Nairobi. There, amid extraordinary hardship, we witnessed God already at work through faithful local leadership. We invite you to come and see this new chapter with us.
In February of this year, we ventured into a new area, the Dandora landfill, adjacent to the Korogocho slum. Praying for direction, we met a self-described “man of peace” whose name is Andrew. A former journalist, Andrew had witnessed children as young as three sorting through the landfill’s mountain of trash. Many he saw picking through the rubbish should have been in school.
Unable to ignore what he had seen, Andrew began rescuing children and started the Red Hill Education Center near the top of the landfill. In the midst of the trash and sewage, he provided structure and safety from the predators looking to exploit those unprotected children. The school now serves 270 students from pre-kindergarten through grade 9. As its outreach grows, the school is desperately seeking to relocate off the hill.
This new partnership has felt heavy to me, not least because the evil in the area is almost tangible. Having volunteered in many orphanages and having experience as an adoptive mom, I am attuned to the impacts of trauma on behavior. As I witnessed trauma’s effects firsthand among the children of Red Hill, I wondered how we could make a long-term difference in their lives.
As a first step, we began working with Andrew to ensure the children at Red Hill are fed. They now receive daily porridge as well as lunch. We were able to visit them shortly after their meals program began and saw that children who had been exhausted and hungry were now energetic. Teachers confirmed there was a night and day difference in their students’ attentiveness — all because the kids were receiving meals costing only 50 cents a day, or about $90 a year per child.
In addition to helping with meals, we are helping Red Hill teachers receive new curriculum materials, computers and learning supplies.
